When you first begin vaping it can seem like there is a lot to learn, but getting your head around the basics is easier than you might think.

Once you have figured out how to vape, which vape device is best for you and how to choose the right vape liquid, there are some other tips and pieces of guidance that can help your transition to vaping to be smooth and easy.

Vaping etiquette in Australia

Vaping has meant that thousands of Australians have put down harmful and stinky cigarettes for good, but that doesn’t mean our manners need to go up in smoke too.

There are rules around where you can vape, and knowing them can save you from hefty penalties. It’s also a good idea to avoid confined spaces or vaping when you are waiting in a queue.

Even though vaping doesn’t produce toxic, unpleasant plumes of smoke like cigarettes, nobody enjoys a mouthful of someone else’s vapour. Whether it’s the person waiting next to you in line for coffee or your fellow vaping mate, don’t blow your cloud in someone’s face.

If there are kids or teens around, it can be a good idea to keep you vaping out of their space. While chances are you took up vaping to quit smoking, teens are experimenting with vaping at a concerning rate. It is important to consider the danger in the unknown as often when teens can’t get access to high quality vapes through legal routes they may turn to the use of illegal, high nicotine vapes which can be hugely detrimental to kids’ safety.

Why can’t I taste my vape juice anymore? Vaper’s tongue may be the answer

Vaper’s tongue or vape fatigue is when you can no longer taste the vape flavour in your e-liquid. It’s pretty common among vapers, especially if you stick to your favourite flavoured vape juice without switching flavours regularly.

If you’re relatively new to vaping and have stuck with one flavour to begin with, you may have noticed the flavour of your vape liquid or pod just isn’t what it used to be. Chances are you’ve got vaper’s tongue.

It’s believed this is due to what is called olfactory fatigue. Having experienced the same flavour so repeatedly, the nerves in your mouth and throat that send signals of flavour and smell to the brain become desensitised to your vape flavour.

To make a comparison, it’s pretty much the same thing as a smoker no longer smelling smoke on their clothes or breath.

The solution is simple – switch it up! Experiment with different aiero vape flavours, if you’re used to a creamy custard flavour like aiero Caramel Waffle change to something more fruity like Watermelon, Strawberry and Kiwi to ignite different flavour receptors on your taste buds.

Other tips to avoid vaper’s tongue or flavour fatigue are to stay hydrated (saliva is essential to taste) and keep good oral hygiene (this affects your ability to taste flavours).

While the switch from traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes, or vapes, has offered smokers a potentially less harmful alternative for their habit

Getting headaches from vaping?

Headaches from vaping can happen from too low nicotine or too high nicotine concentrations. If the nicotine content of your vape liquid is too low, you may be getting headaches as a withdrawal symptom.

More commonly people get headaches from having too much nicotine. If you are new to vaping it’s common to be puffing away, experimenting with your vape and different pod flavours and unknowingly overdo it.

Nicotine and other ingredients in vape liquid can dehydrate you, a common cause of headaches. So it’s important to drink lots of water and vape in moderation.

Other reasons people can get headaches from vaping can be sensitivities to vape flavours or propylene glycol (PG). Some people find they can increase the vegetable glycine (VG) content of their vape liquid or switch flavours and headaches disappear.

Sore throat solutions for vapers

Getting a sore throat from vaping usually passes after the first few days of vaping once your body adapts to the process. But there are a few other reasons you might get a sore throat from vaping.

  • High nicotine can be irritating to the throat for some people
  • High propylene glycol causes the throat hit sensation similar to smoking, but combined with high nicotine may cause a sore throat. Experiment with increasing the VG content in your e-liquid
  • Burnt out coils can cause irritation to the mouth and throat, try a new coil or switch out your refillable pod
  • Dehydration PG and VG are hygroscopic, meaning they attract water and can dry out the membranes in your mouth. Stay hydrated
  • Vaping technique is very different to smoking, inhaling too fast and deeply can cause a sore throat. Read more about vaping techniques here
